Professor Battin began his teaching career as a part-time faculty member at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), teaching such topics as corrections, policing, criminology, and crime prevention. He joined Mansfield University in January 2011, teaching core classes in both criminal justice and criminology. His academic interests include criminological theory, evidence-based crime prevention, urban sprawl, social disorganization/collective efficacy, geographic information systems, police organization/management, and hot-spot policing/directed patrol.

Currently, Professor Battin is conducting a study that measures informal social control and social cohesion within an urban setting and the relationship to demographic variables and perceptions of crime. This study is advancing current criminological thought by advocating additional data collection through various associations within society.

Since 2007, Professor Battin has presented and published various work in the criminal justice and criminology fields. He has presented at numerous national conferences on urban sprawl, migration trends and crime, hot-spot policing, collective efficacy theory, policy evaluation, and research methodology. He recently published an article critically assessing directed patrol policy and research methodology. Professor Battin has also dedicated his time to consulting for the City of Pittsburgh’s Weed and Seed Program and the Borough of Blairsville’s Neighborhood Watch Program.

Professor Battin was given the Roskens Scholar Award in 2005 and IUP’s Doctoral Fellowship Award in 2009. His academic memberships include Phi Kappa Phi National All-Discipline Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society, American Society of Criminology, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and the International Association for Correctional and Forensic Psychology.

Professor Battin has various professional experiences outside of academia. He served six years in the United States Marine Corps, being deployed twice to the Iraq Theatre. During 2003, he participated in the offensive against Iraq, subsequently occupying a large metropolitan providence in southern Iraq. During that time period, his unit implemented "Task Force Finest" where Iraqi civilians were recruited, equipped, and trained as police officers. Approximately one year after Professor Battin’s homecoming, his unit was deployed again to act as an occupying force in southern Baghdad. There he served as a machine gunner on a mobile strike team providing convoy security. His selected military awards include two Navy Unit Commendations, a Presidential Unit Citation, two Combat Action Ribbons, an Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and two Global War on Terrorism Service Medals.

Professor Battin also worked for the Pennsylvania State Senate where he provided state services for constituents and focused on criminal justice casework. Noteworthy accomplishments include assisting with the procurement of state grant monies for local development projects and acting as principle investigator for state sentencing legislation.

As a full-time faculty member at Mansfield University, Professor Battin serves as the CJA Department representative for the university’s faculty senate. He is also the CJA Department assessment coordinator for Mansfield University’s Middle States accreditation self-study, as well as the faculty advisor for Lambda Alpha Epsilon American Association of Criminal Justice.

Outside of academia, Professor Battin enjoys participating in competitive long-range rifle matches, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife and his dog "Tucker."
