Recent Criminal Justice Internships

Below is a listing of internships in which Mansfield University criminal justice students have participated. Its purpose is to provide current and potential students an idea of where our students intern.

Fall 2009

Spotlight On:

Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office, Williamsport

Jacob Sanders

Jacob SandersI have been an intern for the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office since the beginning of the Fall ’09 semester and frankly, it has been one of the greatest experiences of my college career. I have learned so much as an intern and I know that the knowledge I have acquired at the District Attorney’s Office will be a great asset to my future career.
During my time as an intern, I have worked on many challenging tasks. I have organized trial folders for various cases, logged evidence, researched cases, worked the trial computer & other equipment, and other various tasks to help the attorneys, detectives, and support staff. I have learned so much from completing these tasks and will carry that through my life.

Learning through observing has been the greatest experience, though. I have observed preliminary hearings, arraignments, pre-trial motion hearings, status conferences, and jury trials. In observing these criminal proceedings and how each step is important to the criminal justice system, I have obtained a greater knowledge of how the system works and what needs to be done so each step in the process runs smoothly.

The internship was such a great experience for me simply because I really got to see the criminal justice system firsthand. A person can learn everything about criminal justice they can, but until they work in the field and experience how it works firsthand, they really can’t comprehend what goes on in the day-to-day world of criminal justice. This has been a wonderful experience and I would encourage anyone who is interested in criminal justice to do an internship and learn through observing the system firsthand.

Summer 2009

Spotlight On:

PA Attorney General’s Office, Bureau of Narcotics, State College, PA

Danielle Kleckner

Danielle KlecknerDuring the summer of 2009 I interned with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s (OAG) Bureau of Narcotics in State College. The Bureau of Narcotics falls under the Criminal Law Division of the OAG and enforces the state’s narcotics laws. I was given many great learning experiences, all of which I will take with me in my future career in Criminal Justice. I was able to fully understand all that is involved in the law enforcement field and the responsibilities that are set out for law enforcement personnel.

Throughout the 12 weeks of my internship, I had opportunities to help out on surveillance of controlled narcotics buys with confidential informants, go out on a raid and serve arrest warrants, prepare for and attend a trial, and even experience writing an official report, along with many other tasks throughout the office. Through these experiences, I had the opportunity to become more familiar with cases, and I actually was able witness how those particular cases were progressing and how the investigations were being carried out. I hope that through this knowledge that I have learned and my experience, I will be able to find a great job once I graduate that will make me feel as excited as I was throughout my internship.

Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Federal Correctional Complex (FCC), Allenwood, PA

Terrell Lehman, Senior, Criminal Justice Major

Terrell LehmanThis past summer 2009 I had the opportunity to intern with the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) in Allenwood, PA. This was an amazing experience to gain hands-on learning in a field that I am interested in. I got to see many aspects of a federal prison system that many people will never see unless they are an employee within the justice system. I handled inmates from maximum security to low security, whose crimes ranged from murder to forgery. This experience was a once in a lifetime chance to see the behind the scenes work that correctional officers undertake every day.

I spent most of my time in the FCC’s Receiving and Discharge Department in all three levels of security, where every inmate coming in or leaving the FCC must pass through. This was a very important assignment and they had a great group of officers assigned there. The staff taught me a lot of things that have helped me decide on future career paths and also see the aspect of these jobs from the employees’ point of view.

I transferred to Mansfield after my freshman year from the so-called “Jewel” of the PA State System of Higher Education. I was not happy with the education I was receiving there and always had Mansfield on my radar. I finally decided to visit MU and the visit made my mind up quickly. The faculty, staff and people here are dedicated to making sure we come away with not only a degree but with rewarding life experiences. I would have never had the opportunity to do an internship as great as I did if it wasn’t for the CJA staff helping me. I am currently enrolled in the ACT 120 Police Academy here on campus and will be graduating two semesters ahead of schedule - another example of how Mansfield University has helped me and gave me the tools to become successful.
